Though the missionary does spend some time in his home country, he is open to being sent wherever the Lord leads him \u2013 ultimately finding his \u201chome\u201d in the Word of God. The Comboni Missionary Brother realizes his vocation by actively participating in the building up and development of the human and Christian family. He does this through his profession (be it doctor, laborer, lawyer, teacher, etc.).<\/p>\n The missionary witness is translated for the Comboni Missionary in a particular way of living the mission, according to a precise methodology, concrete and valiant. The fundamental elements of this way of life come from the words of St. Daniel Comboni. As an Institute\u00a0exclusively missionary\u00a0within the Roman Catholic Church, we welcome young men who want to dedicate their lives in service of the Kingdom of Life in the areas of our world where the signs of death abound.<\/p>\n The vocation to missionary life is first and foremost a response to God’s call and the Gospel challenge, “Go out to all the world and proclaim the Good News” (Mk 16:15). It’s a sobering thought to think that two thousand years after Jesus walked the face of the earth, the majority of the world’s people still await the proclamation of the Kingdom of God!<\/p>\n The missionary vocation calls for service, and for us that means to grow in solidarity with the poor. St. Daniels’ passion was for the “poorest and most abandoned.” This requires an adventurous spirit but above all, a trusting spirit! We learn from, love, and respect the culture of the country in which we are sent. \r\n\r\nI was assigned to be the parish administrator of Holy Cross in South Central Los Angeles almost six years ago. I had already been a missionary priest fifteen years, and had worked in Egypt, Sudan, and South Africa for more than twelve years. I could say that I spent my best years in the mission of my dreams\u2014Africa!<\/span>\r\n\r\nHowever, I was never in charge of a parish, and so I did not have the experience of those priests that I met at Holy Cross, Father Xavier Colleoni and Father Robert Kleiner, who have been serving in South Central LA for more than forty and twelve years, respectively.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe challenge of serving \u201cmy own people,\u201d that is, the Hispanic community, is that being a Comboni Missionary and working at home made me feel as if I was not a \u201creal\u201d missionary. I always thought that this service would be temporary, and then I could go back to my mission in Africa. Still, I was grateful to be given the chance to guide this community of migrant people.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs my confreres aged and their health deteriorated, I started feeling that I could not do the job alone and, sadly, there was no one on the horizon coming to take my place. Give us missionary vocations to religious and priestly life as well as steadfast laypeople.<\/span><\/h5>\r\n
Precious God, we want vocations as Saint Daniel Comboni wanted them: Holy and Capable. So that they may have their heart as the Pierced Heart of Jesus: A heart that suffers and takes pity on the sufferings of the most poor and neglected peo\u00adple. A Heart that is continuously searching for those people who are lost in every human situation until Jesus finds them and brings them home.<\/span><\/h5>\r\n
We ask this through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, our most sweet and Holy Mother.<\/span><\/h5>\r\n
O Jesus, give us vocations for your Church according to your heart.
