style=\"color: #000000;\">Foundation) \u2014 Asia-Pacific nations are <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">speeding up project approvals and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">removing environmental protections to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">spur economic growth dented by the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">coronavirus, moves that will hurt rural <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and indigenous communities, analysts <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Indonesia has issued a law that makes it <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">easier to take over community land, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">including those of indigenous groups, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and for forests to be cleared for industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">India has opened coal mining to the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">private sector in forest land, while a new <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">environment impact assessment (EIA) <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">notification allows speedier project <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">approvals and less compliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Australia will fast-track approval for roads and other projects including the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expansion of BHP Group\u2019s Olympic Dam, while the Cook Islands will grant <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">seabed mining licenses to bolster its tourism-dependent economy. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But besides addressing jobs and infrastructure issues, stimulus projects must <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">deliver \u201cbroad, long-term community value, reduce inequality and help <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">counter climate change,\u201d said Elizabeth Mossop, a dean at the University <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of Technology in Sydney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt is not clear that fast-tracking actually saves time in the long run, and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">there is little evidence that it provides us with good outcomes,\u201d she told <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Thomson Reuters Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe risks are that these projects benefit large corporations, rather than <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">communities, rural areas, women and people who most need jobs,\u201d
