On Friday, February 9 , at around noon, an armed group kidnapped Comboni Brother <\/span>Dr. Carlos Salgado Ortiz and Dr. Aleksandra Kuligowska, a Polish<\/span>
volunteer who was working at the hospital in Dono Manga <\/span>(Chad). <\/span><\/p>\n

The authorities in the province of Tandjil\u00e9, immediately s<\/span>et outsearching for the kidnappers and the abducted. Having <\/span>quickly tracked down the group of armed kidnappers who had fled on <\/span>motorbikes, there was an initial attempt to free the kidnapped persons. By <\/span>the time the security forces arrived, Dr. Carlos had been made to get off the <\/span>motorbike momentarily. This allowed him to throw himself to the ground when <\/span>the police arrived, while the other motorbike unfortunately managed to get <\/span>away with the kidnapped volunteer. <\/span><\/p>\n

The criminals had informed <\/span>the two abductees to stay calm because the purpose of their kidnapping was <\/span>only to demand a ransom. Bro. Carlos, although shaken, was able to <\/span>return to Dono Manga immediately: he is well and has resumed his duties as a <\/span>doctor. <\/span><\/p>\n

It took several days for the joint effort of the security apparatus, <\/span>aided by a contingent of French troops, to free the second hostage, Dr. <\/span>Kuligowska, who was unharmed.<\/span><\/p>\n

A statment from the Comboni General Council said, “We thank the Lord <\/span>for the safety of our brother and the volunteer; we also thank all those who <\/span>mobilised to achieve the result for which we are grateful today. We express <\/span>all our solidarity with the confreres and staff of the Hospital, all the <\/span>confreras and sisters of the Chad delegation and the families of Dr. Carlos <\/span>and the volunteers working there; we pray that what has happened will remain <\/span>an isolated incident.”<\/span><\/p>\n
